📷 Ricoh GR IV: Six Years of Waiting… for This?
When I first saw the press release for the Ricoh GR IV, I honestly couldn’t believe it. Six years since the release of the GR III, and this is what Ricoh delivers? As someone who shoots daily street photography here in Taiwan, I had high hopes for the next evolution of the GR series. Sadly, those hopes weren’t met.
Expectations Were High
The GR III wasn’t perfect, but it was a reliable, compact street camera that allowed photographers like me to work fast and get close. Over the years, I’ve grown to love it — quirks and all. But after six years, I expected Ricoh to bring something bold to the table:
• Weather sealing
• Better autofocus
• A built-in viewfinder
• Meaningful changes that improve the experience
Instead, we got… not much.
What’s New?
They say that all the internals are new, but do we need that? Personally I would prefer new features that improve the handling and abilities.
Lens has an extra element now
New 26mp sensor
Micro SD
53GB internal storage (up from 2GB)
5 axis IBIS
The problematic rear wheel has gone and we just have a 4-way D-pad. A rocker switch replaces the multi-selector
New SN option on the Mode Dial (Snap Distance Priority?)
A Missed Opportunity
The Ricoh GR series has always had a cult following — and for good reason. These cameras are compact, discreet, and sharp. But with this release, Ricoh missed the chance to lead in the street photography space. They played it safe, and in today’s fast-paced photography world, that’s not enough.
Why It Matters (Especially in Taiwan)
Here in Taiwan, where the streets are vibrant and full of life, we need tools that keep up. Whether I’m cycling through Kaohsiung or capturing daily life in Tainan, I want a camera that responds quickly, focuses reliably, and gives me confidence in the shot. The GR III mostly delivers. The GR IV… doesn’t move the needle.
Final Thoughts
I’ve put my thoughts into a full video on my YouTube channel, where I go into more detail about the press release and my personal reaction. It’s not about bashing Ricoh — it’s about holding them to a higher standard because we care.
Have a look, and let me know what you think. Am I being too harsh, or do you feel the same?
