Master Street Photography in Taiwan

A tortoise's mouth closes on a leaf, held out on a long pair of tongs by someone standing just outside the frame. One clean diagonal line runs from an unseen hand to the exact instant of contact. A small, warm, quietly funny study in patience — both the tortoise's and whoever built the tool to feed it.

This looks, at first glance, like a working supply room tucked behind some larger, more formal temple hall — the kind of practical back-of-house space a bigger complex keeps out of sight. It isn't. This small, old temple, built into the trees near where the photograph was taken, doesn't have a separate hall elsewhere holding a grander version of what's shown here. This modest, cluttered space is close to the whole thing. A wide, warm, genuinely lived-in frame that shows exactly what a small local temple actually looks like when it doesn't have the luxury of separating its altar from its own supplies.

Three elderly men share a bench outside a temple in Lingya District. Two of them are looking directly at the camera, calm and unbothered. The third isn't — his attention, and his pointing finger, are aimed entirely at the friend beside him instead. A small, exact split this blog hasn't caught quite this way before.
