Day 32/365 - Unexpected Moments: A Kaohsiung Street Parade
Day 32 was supposed to be straightforward—ride to an indoor market in Kaohsiung, capture some shots, and call it a day. But that's the beautiful thing about street photography: plans change, and sometimes the best moments find you when you're not actively looking for them.
On my ride home, I encountered a vibrant street parade unfolding through Kaohsiung's streets. The energy was infectious—colorful decorations, festive atmosphere, and genuine human moments happening all around me. I immediately grabbed my Ricoh GRIII and started shooting.
This particular image captures something I love about street photography in Taiwan: the openness and warmth of people. Two gentlemen, clearly enjoying the parade, were delighted when they spotted a beautifully dressed woman nearby. Their enthusiasm to be photographed together with her was genuine and joyful—no hesitation, no awkwardness, just pure community spirit and celebration.
It's these spontaneous, unplanned moments that remind me why I'm so passionate about street photography. You can't script this kind of authenticity. You can't plan genuine human connection. All you can do is be present, stay alert, and be ready when the moment presents itself.
The Ricoh GRIII is perfect for this kind of work—compact, fast, and always ready. It's the camera I reach for when I want to move quickly through the streets and capture life as it unfolds.
If you're interested in learning to embrace the unexpected in your photography and developing the skills to capture authentic human moments, I offer photography workshops throughout Taiwan, as well as global and online mentoring programs. My daily 365 project is a testament to the power of showing up and staying present. Follow along on Patreon for more stories like this.
