Day 333/365 A Temple With No Backstage

This looks, at first glance, like a working supply room tucked behind some larger, more formal temple hall — the kind of practical back-of-house space a bigger complex keeps out of sight. It isn't. This small, old temple, built into the trees near where the photograph was taken, doesn't have a separate hall elsewhere holding a grander version of what's shown here. This modest, cluttered space is close to the whole thing. A wide, warm, genuinely lived-in frame that shows exactly what a small local temple actually looks like when it doesn't have the luxury of separating its altar from its own supplies.

Day 331/365 What The Monk Was Watching Over

A dried shark fin the size of a small mountain, folded into a glass display case with a red ribbon tied at its peak, sits directly beneath a framed portrait of an elderly monk. Gold brocade wallpaper, a reflected stranger caught in the glass, and a question this photograph never quite answers about what, exactly, is being honoured here.

Day 330/365 Someone Marked This Mirror First

What looks at first like a photograph taken through a blurred foreground object is actually something stranger: a reflection, caught in a mirror someone else had already scrawled graffiti across. A woman and a man go about an ordinary evening at a food stall, unaware they are being viewed twice removed, through marks that were never meant to frame anyone.

Day 329/365 Doors Open, Waiting

A small red street shrine, tucked against a brick wall somewhere in Kaohsiung, its cabinet doors open to reveal incense, offering cups and a carved dragon and phoenix catching the glow of two electric lamps. A study in symmetry, colour harmony rather than contrast, and what the wear on a devotional object tells you about how recently it was actually used.

Day 328/365 The Bicycle Graveyard Has A Witness

Dozens of derelict bicycles, tangled into a single dense mass against a crumbling Kaohsiung facade, and a man leaning out of an upper window watching over all of it. Most viewers will see the pile first and the witness never. This is a study in what deep focus and patient looking can do for a scene built almost entirely out of accumulation.

Day 326/365 Where The Light Runs Out

A curved residential tower, photographed close and steeply angled until it stops looking like a building and starts looking like pure rhythm. Repeating balconies curve away into a wedge of solid black. A study in what a photograph is allowed to leave out, and how much structure a frame can carry once everything unnecessary has been erased by shadow.
